We recently talked to the founder, Mark Hewitt to learn more about JobuTrax.
How did you come up with the idea for your startup?
Traditional software is expensive, takes forever to implement, and is very complicated to use. Company owners were spending more time managing and paying for servers, software licensing, consulting fees, downtime etc. than actually building their business. A combination of things came together to make JobuTrax a reality: financial capability; the evolution of Internet technologies; and the readiness to take the risk and build an excellent product with great service.
What has been the biggest challenge so far?
Finding talented individuals and making the economics work, given their limited supply, is always a challenge. Another challenge is service companies believing that their field workers can fill out a form on a laptop or tablet instead of paper. One of our customers has 160 field workers of varying backgrounds and they are all on JobuTrax – so we know it can be done! On that topic, we see JobuTrax starting to be used as a recruiting tool because younger workers feel comfortable using their smartphones and tablets so to offer them the ability to work on these devices vs. paper is an advantage to the company.
Are there any key individuals outside of your organization that have been of great help to your startup?
Our customers know they can pick up the phone and we’ll be accessible at any time. This trusted relationship means we are more like partners and they contribute suggestions that, in turn, make JobuTrax even better.
What’s new with your startup that we can share?
We recently connected into a customer’s accounting system to pass ticket and time information for invoicing and we did it in one hour – saving several days each month that was otherwise spent re-entering data; and one lady was ecstatic that we saved her 256 hours each year because JobuTrax automatically does her ISN Safety Metrics report!

Personally, do you think it is more difficult to raise capital or find the right talent?
Finding the right talent probably – individuals who “get it” and “just do it”. A few, really talented individuals are much more productive than any alternative. As far as financing goes, there have been a few organizations come forward so if funding was required it’s nice to know it could be there.
What has contributed to your success to this point?
I’ve always wanted to do the very best for my customers. I’ve taken calls from guys in the field at all hours. Everything else seems to come together from that including financial rewards.
What made you choose to go down the path of entrepreneurship?
I get immense satisfaction from solving problems for my customers so when a number of things came together I decided it was time to take the risk and go for it. As an entrepreneur I have the freedom to focus on what matters – things getting done. Building something from nothing is very rewarding as is knowing I made a difference by reducing the administrative burden of someone’s daily work and growing my customer’s bottom line at the same time.
What are your thoughts on Calgary’s startup community?
It’s great to see the coverage of Calgary’s startup scene taking root. Coverage of positive things going on in the community provides its citizens with a more optimistic view into the opportunities being created that one might not otherwise be aware of.
What’s your ask right now?
Customers are the key to success and drive all other decisions. We made a conscience decision not to grow rapidly, to this point, so that we could provide excellent support to our current customers – now we’re in a really good spot to continue our high service standard as well as bring on more customers.
